ATLANTIC A.I. SERVICES

We have been involved in the breeding of horses for more than fifteen years, starting with standard "live cover" techniques, progressing through the use of on farm A.I. and cooled transported semen, to frozen semen in more recent years.

We currently offer the following equine reproduction services:

Custom freezing of semen.
Phantom training of stallions.
Stallion management for breeding purposes.
Collection and preparation of semen for on farm A.I. or transport.
Mare management for breeding by live cover, on farm A.I. or transported semen.

In addition to the above, we are engaged in various research projects involving frozen semen and stallion and mare management.

Please note that although we perform rectal palpations, in order that we comply with section 2(h)(ix) of the Nova Scotia Provincial Veterinary Medical Act, these are only done in connection with determining the correct timing of A.I. and as a part of that process, and we do not and will not perform these in a diagnostic manner, as the results voiced are merely our opinions as to whether we should inseminate that day or not, and are not definitive descriptions of follicular size, location and/or condition. We will not perform rectal palpations on mares to determine pregnancy; or in any other manner, or for purposes other than that described above.

NOTES & DESCRIPTIONS

All prices quoted are subject to any additional taxes such as HST.
All pricing is for services carried out at Deepwater Farm. Off-farm services may be subject to an additional mileage charge of 40^c per mile.

Board charges for horses boarding at Deepwater Farm are $12.00 per day.

Some Breed Registries require a veterinarian to be present at the time of semen collection or insemination of the mare in order to allow registration of the resulting foal. The same is required of semen collected for export, which will also require certain export permits. If these are a requirement, let us know. We will arrange scheduling, and the Veterinarian's and Government fees will be charged out at cost. Please call us to discuss these special requirements further.

As we are not veterinarians, we are unable to supply or use restricted drugs. There are many instances where drug use is valuable in connection with breeding, and we will be pleased to work with your veterinarian in ensuring that animals that may achieve better fertility with drug therapy do so. If your veterinarian is not experienced in reproductive management, we are happy to discuss possible options with him or her in an effort to ensure maximum fertility of your animals.

STALLION MANAGEMENT

PHANTOM OR GROUND COLLECTION TRAINING

Phantom or ground collection training consists of teaching the stallion to either mount a phantom mare and ejaculate into an artificial vagina; or ejaculate into an AV or while undergoing manual stimulation while standing on the ground. This is carried out once on the first day, and then on two occasions one hour apart on the next day or the day after. The first semen sample is discarded, serving only to "clean" the stallion. On the day when two samples are taken one hour apart, both samples are evaluated for sperm concentration levels, motility and morphology.

Ground collection training of a stallion: $500.00

COOLED SEMEN ANALYSIS

Once the stallion is trained to breed a phantom, it may be desirable to evaluate the ability of the stallion's semen to ship in an Equitainer, cooled. The semen is evaluated and extended using several different extenders and concentrations. Samples are then packed into an Equitainer and evaluated again at 24 hours and if suitable at 48 and 72 hours.

Cooled semen analysis: $55.00 plus collection and extension charges.

SEMEN TRANSPORT

Collection charges, as above, apply to semen collections carried out by our personnel. All freight charges are the responsibility of the stallion owner, including charges for the return of a rented Equitainer or frozen semen "dry shipper".

Equitainer and frozen semen "dry shipper" rental is subject to availability. Equitainers and "dry shippers" must be reserved in advance, and rental paid at that time. Pre-paid rental is non-refundable.

MARE MANAGEMENT

MANAGEMENT OF A MARE FOR INSEMINATION BY TRANSPORTED SEMEN OR ON-FARM A.I.

This includes checks to ensure the timely insemination of the mare, and multiple inseminations if required. Long distance telephone calls to order semen or consult with the client or stallion owner are charged in addition at cost.

Insemination package: $150.00 per estrus cycle for fresh "on farm" semen; $175.00 for cooled transported or frozen semen.
